COAL
Coal is a Fossil fuel which is burnt to produce energy. This chemical energy in the coal is turned into heat energy to fuel the fire. The fire boils the water turning it into steam. This steam turns the turbine and since the turbine is connected to the generator this produces electricity (which can power anything electric from your television to your washing machine). The steam is cooled by the condenser and turned back to liquid which is heated by the coal again.
When coal is burnt some of it may not be burnt properly and create a thing called smog which can coat a surface in a dark black carbon coating. However if it is burnt prperly it will bond with oxygen and create a greenhouse gas called carbon dioxide.
