Gabbions are made from rocks and boulder which are encaged in wired cages. As they hit the gabbion the energy of the wave is absorbed.

 

They are cheaper than other solutions like A sea wall or groynes. They cost around £11 per metre.however they are very unattractive and make the beach seem un-natural and the life span of the gabbion is considerably shorter than a sea wall. However the price combined with it life span make it realy efficent and a great value for money.

Gabbions are usually placed in area which erosion is most vunerable.
