Waste Management in Hounslow

The hounslow bourough has tried to reduce amounts of waste sent to landfills by them. In 2014 36% of waste was recycled.

There are over 40 recycle sites around the bourough. Recycleables are collected weekly. with green boxes for food waste cardboard and cans but a white bag for plasic.

What is a landfill?

a landfill involves disposing waste in a hole in the ground and then covering it with soil or rocks.

Who Uses Landfills?

It is common for HIC's to take advantage of this very cheap and easy way to dispose of waste.however the enviroment around is being infected due to the liquids leaching out into soil and water.

Landfills

Benefits of Landfill Use

  • ï‚· Cheap, quick and easy

  • ï‚· Deposing waste in landfill releases methane which can be used to generate electricity

  • ï‚· Once full, a landfill site can be landscaped and re-used

Negatives of Landfill Use

  • Local authorities are now taxed if too much of their waste is sent to landfill making the process increasingly expensive.

  • ï‚· The best landfill sites have in most cases already been used.

  • ï‚· Landfill sites can be some distance from where the waste was collected, leading to expensive transport and a large carbon footprint.

  • ï‚· Hazardous waste from landfill can escape into the environment.

Most HICs dispose of their waste using three methods:

Incineration is the burning of waste. Burnt waste takes up far less space and energy. Incineration technology has improved considerably over the past 50 years making the process cleaner and more efficient. however, strong public opposition still remains in some HICs, including the UK.

Benefits of Incineration

  •  Incineration plants can be built close to where the waste is collected, reducing transport costs.

  •  Heat from the waste furnace can be used to generate electricity.

  •  Only a small amount of ash ends-up going to landfill.

Negatives of Inceneration

  • Once burnt the resource is lost forever.

  •  To be effective incineration plants need large amounts of waste, reducing the incentive to recycle.

  •  The incineration process releases carbon dioxide, contributing to climate change, and a range of hazardous gases that can local health issues.

Most HICs have introduced large scale recycling processes to reduce the amount of waste going to either landfill or incineration. Although most HICs are now good at collecting recyclables most lack the infrastructure to deal with the collected waste. As a result, recyclables are often exported to LICs for ‘processing’.
